Profile

Margaret Kirk is an active multi-hyphenate as an award-winning designer and artist, educated in New York and Florence, Italy, who possesses extensive experience in architectural education, design, construction, and project management.

Ms. Kirk's architectural work includes a diverse portfolio ranging from small exhibitions to large eco-resorts both domestically and internationally for renowned institutions, government agencies, development companies, and celebrity clients.  Her work has brought her around the world for construction-related tasks and administration.  She is the owner of the architectural consultancy, s.341-b, is a Certified Passive House Consultant through PHIUS, regularly instructs on the Architect Registration Exams, and is the lead author on publications for all divisions of the ARE.


Concurrent with her professional practice, Ms. Kirk has been on the faculties of esteemed institutions since 2005 instructing at every level of undergraduate and graduate study.  She has taught design studios, building systems and construction technology, computational design and fabrication, media, communication and representation courses.  She has a deep interest in technology, materials, advanced fabrication development, and theories for symbiotic architectural morphogenesis and is working on associated research developing performative form| facade for renewable energy collection with engineers across the country.

Maggie is a published writer and editorial board member for d3:dialog and International Journal for Interior Architecture and Spatial Design.  She has served on numerous design juries including Unbuilt Visions, and has founded her own peer-reviewed online journal, Venn Design Journal, examining projects and theories based in the enmeshing of technology and design.

While at Cal Poly, Maggie has taught undergraduate studios, building technology activity courses, and interdisciplinary design studios.  Her interdisciplinary studios with ARCE and CM have incorporated an emphasis on design-build- designing and constructing a panelized house for the rebuilding effort of Weed, CA after the Boles Fire and designing and constructing a showcase pavilion for the Wine History Project of San Luis Obispo County.  A past studio of Maggie's also participated in the rebuilding efforts for Paradise, CA proposing PHIUS-based passive house certifiable and resilient single-family homes.  Of the numerous awards she has received throughout her career, at Cal Poly she has been awarded the LPA Grant for Interdisciplinary Studies, Hearst Student Scholar Fellowship Award for research development, and Cal Poly Community Service Award: Service Learning – Faculty Team.
