""Spring 2018 Hearst Lecture Series:
Iñaki Alday of adlayjover arquitectura y paisaje, Barcelona/Charlottesville

Friday, April 20 at 5:00pm
Business Rotunda (03-213)

Iñaki Alday (Zaragoza, 1965) is, together with Margarita Jover, the founder of aldayjover architecture and landscape, based in Barcelona since 1996. aldayjover is a multidisciplinary research based practice focused on innovation inspired by the specific character of place. The work is particularly renowned by its leadership in a new approach to the relation between cities and rivers, in which natural dynamics are considered generative to meaningful public space, eliminating the idea of “catastrophe”.

aldayjover has designed some of the most important recent public spaces in Barcelona (Green Diagonal-Sagrera), Zaragoza (Water Park), Pamplona (Aranzadi), and Ibiza (Vara de Rei), as well as architectural pieces and landscapes (The Mill Cultural Center, DHC, or the Recovery of the Gallego river in Zuera). Currently, aldayjover is working in several locations in Spain, South Asia and Puerto Rico, on projects that combine heritage and new buildings, natural dynamics of rivers and public space and social dynamics. As urban experts, the firm is currently working with the World Bank on some of the most acute urban challenges in South Asia and Latin America. aldayjover has been awarded with the European Public Space Prize (2002), the FAD Prize (2009), the Urban Integration (2011), the AZ awards (2015), the nomination for the Mies van der Rohe EU award (2009), and a number of Spanish and Iberian prizes.

Design Village 2018 - Balance

Earth Day Weekend!
Friday, April 20- Sunday, April 22

As currently the only truly-native competition hosted by Cal Poly’s prestigious undergraduate Architecture program, the Design Village competition has a long history and has become one of the most anticipated events of the year for the College of Architecture & Environmental Design (CAED). True to our “learn by doing” motto, competitors design, build, and inhabit shelters in Poly Canyon.

This year our theme is Balance. Balance is to offset or compare the value of one element with another. In their design, participants will select two contrasting concepts and decide how they interact. Consider how the concepts act alone and then define the moments where they meet and under what conditions they intersect.

More about Design Village can be found at architecture.calpoly.edu/about/Design-Village and designvillage.wixsite.com/designvillage.

Opening Ceremony at noon, 5th Year Class Photo at 11:30am
Sunday, May 27, 10:00am - 2:00PM
Chumash Auditorium

For the past 14 years, the graduating class of architecture students at Cal Poly have collaborated to produce this annual exhibition, which features the completed year-long architectural thesis projects designed by each 5th year architecture student as the final culmination of their undergraduate studies. This event is the largest architectural exhibition between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and celebrates the work of the nation’s mostly highly ranked public architecture program. It is an opportunity for these students to showcase their architectural talent and inventiveness to their peers, family members, community, prospective employers, and supporters of Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design. In addition, it is an opportunity for alumni, prospective students, and the fore-mentioned groups to come together, connect, exchange ideas, and to celebrate the college, its students, and their bright futures.

For more details and to donate to this annual event, please visit architecture.calpoly.edu/architecture-show.
