Advising Policy
First Year Advising
The department will implement an outreach program to inform and advise students during their first year. The program will include visiting all freshmen design studios to provide students with advising related information and establishing triggers that require a student to see an advisor.
First & Second Year Advising Triggers
The following “triggers” will prompt a memo to a student requiring that they meet with a faculty advisor before being allowed to register for the following quarter:
Failing PHYS 121, 131/141, 122, 132
Failing MATH 141, 142, 182
Failing ARCE 211, 212, 226
Failing Design: ARCH 131, 132, 133, 251, 252, 253
Failing Practice or ECS: ARCH, 241, 242, 207
No major or support courses taken in a quarter
Academic Probation (initiated by Ellen Notermann)
Third Year Prerequisites
Beginning with fall of 2006, the prerequisites for enrolling in third year design will be strictly enforced. The prerequisites include completing first and second year design, practice and ECS courses, the two required quarters of both Physics and Math, and the first two quarters of structures as listed below.
ARCH 131, 132, 133, 251, 252, 253
ARCH 241, 242
ARCH 207
EDES 101
PHYS 121, 122
MATH 141, 182
ARCE 211, 212
The curriculum structure and the assurance of a summer program that will include structures courses provides multiple opportunities for students to meet all third year prerequisites. The position of the department is that the best time for students to take a break and get back on track is at the end of second year—before they start third year design.
Third & Fourth Year Advising Triggers
The following “triggers” will prompt a memo to a student requiring that they meet with a faculty advisor before being allowed to register for the following quarter:
Failing ARCE 226, 315, 316
Failing ARCH 217, 218, 219
Failing Design: ARCH 351, 352, 353, 451, 452, 453
Failing Practice or ECS: ARCH 341, 342, 307
No major or support courses taken in a quarter)
Academic Probation (initiated by Ellen Notermann)
Fifth Year Prerequisites
Beginning with fall of 2006, the prerequisites for enrolling in fifth year design will be strictly enforced. The prerequisites include completing the courses previously described as required for entering third year plus the required third and fourth year design, practice, ECS and history courses, and the last three quarters of structures as listed below.
ARCH 351, 352, 353, 451, 452, 453
ARCH 341, 342
ARCH 307
ARCH 217, 218, 219
ARCE 226, 315, 316
The position of the department is that all the required courses are needed for a student to be able to undertake the final year of design and demonstrate through that design that they have met the educational goals of the curriculum.
Fifth Year Application
All students must apply for acceptance into 5th year during Spring quarter of their 4th year. The application requires that students fill out a Studio Preference Form and submit a Statement of Purpose. Students that do not apply will not be accepted into 5th year. Students applying late will have last priority and may not be admitted if all studios are full.
