First Year students complete PARAsite projects

The winter quarter closed with First Year Architecture and Architectural Engineering students completing the team-based paraSITE project .

The project challenges students to create full-scale designs in assigned locations in Building 05, using their ability to discern flows, spaces, materiality, and campus community uses, and celebrating the subtlety of shadows, wind, and time, as well as marking place within the scales of the structure, or providing place for pause or repose and awareness of one’s surroundings.

The project aims to teach First Year students the value of teamwork, achieving more than any single student could as an individual. It also tasks them with managing talent and time within a complex assignment.

"Meet the Firms" Event

A "Meet the Firms" event, especially for Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning students, is scheduled for April 4, 2013, 5:30-7:30pm. The event in the PAC Lobby is a unique recruiting event that gives employers the chance to interact directly with hundreds of highly sought-after students in these majors.

It’s a great opportunity for students to meet face-to-face and connect with key recruiting contacts. Participating employers will be seeking applicants for internships and career positions.  Visit MustangJOBS to view the most up-to-date list of participating employers and job descriptions. Let the employers know of your interest and submit resumes in advance by choosing the RSVP feature.

Architecture students present designs for Lompoc firehouse and community center

Margarida Yin's third year studio presented their designs for a new, fire station, police sub station and community center for the City of Lompoc at their mid-term review/workshop held in the Dick DeWees Community Center in Lompoc. Their designs concepts for an interdependent fire/police station that would also be a community meeting place received positive feedback. Lompoc Fire Chief Kurt Latipow thoroughly checked out each of the proposals and was impressed with the designs. A report on the visit can be found in on Lompoc Record web site. Portfolio Review - Winter 2013 Edition

The Architecture College Based Fees Committee (CBF) and Alpha Rho Chi are hosting a portfoio review for students, to be held in the KTGY Gallery, 5:00-7:00pm, Monday, February 25, and Wednesday, February 27. Students are encouraged to bring their portfolios, resumes and cover letters to share with professors and design professionals for feedback and further advice.

Third year student wins 2nd place in AIA/Kawneer student design competition

Margarida Yin's 3rd Year student, Nick Schwaller, received second place in the AIAS/Kawneer Enlightening Libraries Student Design Competition. This competition challenged students to investigate and design a public library utilizing Kawneer's building products. Nick's project focused on the library as a "community living room...(to) connect people with media and with each other, through a combination of public open spaces, outdoor areas, and quiet reading niches with a view". ZIP: Book show installation

Cal Poly Architecture Department featured in article

The Cal Poly L.A. Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design will be holding lectures, discussions, and events throughout the
winter/spring quarter for its students, alumni, faculty and the
general public in Los Angeles. This year's Event Series is sponsored by HMC Architects and Morphosis Architects and our public lectures will be held at the A+D (Architecture and Design) Museum in West Hollywood.

Highlights from this year's event series include a public talk between internationally acclaimed architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio and UCLA Ph.D. Program Director Sylvia Lavin, a lecture by Princeton School of Architecture Ph.D. Graduate Studies Director Beatriz Colomina on the work of Eero Saarinen, a panel discussion on paradigms of contemporary form with Dora Epstein Jones (SCI-Arc), Stephen Phillips (Cal Poly), Michael Osman (UCLA) and Ingeborg Rocker (Harvard), and a student Charette at South Gate High School in Los Angeles with HMC Architects, among many other terrific lectures, discussions, and events. Interim Architecture Department Head appointed

Professor Jim Doerfler AIA, CSI, has been named Interim Department Head of the Architecture Department. Professor Doerfler has taught at Cal Poly since 2005 and is a leader in developing award winning interdisciplinary design studios and using software to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration at Cal Poly. “I am greatly honored to be chosen to lead at one of the finest architecture departments in the country” he said. “Being part of the faculty here has given me great insight into how special our program is. I look forward to guiding the program with our excellent faculty to advance our strengths as we prepare students to be architects in the 21st century.”

Professor Doerfler succeeds outgoing Department Head, Henri de Hahn, who has accepted the position of Provost at New School of Architecture + Design in San Diego. De Hahn has lead the department since 2006. His leadership accomplishments include the development of the architecture core curriculum, advancing the interdisciplinary approach to design, and expanding off-campus programs. We wish him all the best as he moves on to a new institution.

Freshmen show: 532 Hands on Deck Over 45 Feet

The Faculty of our freshmen year students are pleased to invite you to visit the 260+ first-year architecture (ARCH) and architectural engineering students (ARCE) work on Monday, November 19th, 2012 in the CAED Berg Gallery. Their design work for Hartford Pier at Avila Beach will be on display from 9am am to 4 pm.

2013 DesignIntelligence rankings

The Architecture Department is pleased to announce that the Cal Poly Architecture Program is ranked again in the top six architecture schools nationwide by the DesignIntelligence survey, positioning itself fifth after Cornell University, Southern California Institute of Architecture, Rice University and Syracuse University.

In additional to their national ranking, Cal Poly was ranked:

• 2nd in Top Schools in the West
• 1st by Firms in the Western Region
• 2nd in Construction Methods and Materials (skills assessment ranking)

DesignIntelligence survey ranks public and private degree programs nationally. Cal Poly’s Architecture program has made the nation’s Top 20 list since 2003 with a ranking of sixth or better. The full report can be ordered at the America's Best Architecture & Design Schools, 2013 Edition web site.

Hearst Lecture Series

The CAED and ARCH Department regret to inform that due to Hurricane Sandy in the Atlantic Northeast, Allan and Ellen Wexler will be unable to give the Hearst Lecture, nor be present for the 9th Annual Vellum Jury. We are working with them to reschedule their lecture in the near future.

We are pleased that Mark Jensen, Principal of Jensen Architects, has graciously accepted to lecture this Friday, November 2nd, 2012, and participate in the 9th Annual Vellum Jury that same evening..

Cal Poly's Parent and Family Weekend

As part of Cal Poly's Parent and Family Weekend, the Architecture Department is organizing a series of events on Friday, October, 12th, 2012. An exhibition/reception will take place on Friday between 5-7pm showcasing freshmens' design work along other year's students' work. The Evelyn and Harold hay Media Research Center (MRC) and the CAED workshop will be open for tours.

Cal Poly Named Tops In the West for 20th Year by US News

For the 20th straight year, Cal Poly has been rated the best public-master’s university in the West in U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 America’s Best Colleges guidebook. Cal Poly ranked sixth in the magazine’s overall list of the West’s best universities, including both public and private institutions that provide “a full range of undergraduate and master’s-level programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.”

U.S. News ranks colleges that grant doctoral degrees, such as those in the University of California system, in a separate category. “Being named Best in the West for 20 straight years is a terrific acknowledgment of Cal Poly’s sustained excellence over a long period of time,” said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. “The credit belongs to our faculty and staff for their unwavering dedication and commitment to our students’ success, and it underscores the power of our Learn by Doing philosophy.”
