First Year students complete PARAsite projects

architecture project

The winter quarter closed with First Year Architecture and Architectural Engineering students completing the team-based paraSITE project .

The project challenges students to create full-scale designs in assigned locations in Building 05, using their ability to discern flows, spaces, materiality, and campus community uses, and celebrating the subtlety of shadows, wind, and time, as well as marking place within the scales of the structure, or providing place for pause or repose and awareness of one’s surroundings.

The project aims to teach First Year students the value of teamwork, achieving more than any single student could as an individual. It also tasks them with managing talent and time within a complex assignment.

To see images of the projects go to PARAsite. For a video of the construction of one of the projects go to PARAsite video.

Cal Poly Named Tops In the West for 20th Year by US News

Serial boxes exhibition

For the 20th straight year, Cal Poly has been rated the best public-master’s university in the West in U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 America’s Best Colleges guidebook. Cal Poly ranked sixth in the magazine’s overall list of the West’s best universities, including both public and private institutions that provide “a full range of undergraduate and master’s-level programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.”

U.S. News ranks colleges that grant doctoral degrees, such as those in the University of California system, in a separate category. “Being named Best in the West for 20 straight years is a terrific acknowledgment of Cal Poly’s sustained excellence over a long period of time,” said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. “The credit belongs to our faculty and staff for their unwavering dedication and commitment to our students’ success, and it underscores the power of our Learn by Doing philosophy.”

Cal Poly Alum Alfonso Dominguez' "Popuphood" project recognized

"Despite amenities like a farmers’ market and historic buildings, Oakland’s old business district was lacking in vibrant street life. Architect and local business owner Alfonso Dominguez and artist Sarah Filley co-founded nonprofit popuphood as a small-business incubator to revitalize the neighborhood and spark long-term economic development. Working with a landlord who agreed to provide space in vacant storefronts, Filley and Dominguez recruited five complementary businesses with the promise of six months of free rent and marketing support. The project launched before last Christmas and has so far been a success, generating buzz as a new destination unique for its hyper- local approach to retail. Three of the original retailers have signed long-term leases, and the neighborhood seems on the rise." (SpontaneousInterventions.org)

This project has been profiled nationally on APR/NPR Marketplace and is now part of the 2012 Architecture Biennale di Venezia, opening August 29.For more information go to Popuphood.
