Application Process

Applicants will complete all areas of the on-line Fourth Year Off-Campus Application and submit no later than 4:00 pm, December 3, 2012.  Students must also complete all other individual program additional requirements.

Architecture Department Faculty Advisors will review and verify the applicant’s academic progress, eligibility, and study plan for completing all remaining major and support courses prior to participation in a Fourth Year Off-Campus Study Program.

The Architecture Department Head will determine which students are eligible for consideration based on their completed coursework, study plan, and GPA.

Off Campus Program Coordinators will then review application files for all eligible students who wish to be considered for placement in their respective programs.  All attempts will be made to place applicants into their preferred programs.

Architecture students who do not complete the ARCH 451 prerequisites will NOT be allowed to participate in any year-long off-campus programs.  These students may, however, still be eligible for quarter-long program(s).

Applicants will be notified by their Cal Poly email address of their off-campus study program placement on January 22, 2013, between 12:00pm – 6:00pm.

This placement list will constitute all decisions except final IP (Copenhagen, Denmark and Florence, Italy) placements that are made by the CSU office in Long Beach.  Early March is the anticipated date of the CSU IP notification.  Students recommended for but not subsequently accepted by IP may be considered for alternative off-campus study opportunities where space is available.

Applicants must confirm the accepted choice(s) of their off-campus study program to Off-Campus Program Coordinator(s) on or before February 1, 2013 by 5:00pm.

The Architecture department will notify applicants of their off-campus FINAL attending study program(s) on or before Monday, March 11th, 2013.  Every attempt will be made to provide notification to all applicants to coincide with the CSU IP program notifications; which is usually sent out in early March.

Minor Policy
Architecture students enrolling in the Construction Management Minor are advised that their best option for completing the minor is to remain on campus for at least part of Fourth Year.  This will enable them to satisfy the project based-course requirement (CM 431 or 463).  Enrolling in a one-year off-campus program is almost certain to delay graduation.

Expectations for Student Learning
Learning consultants have told us that teaching and learning are both improved when expectations are clearly communicated by teachers and understood by students.  Toward this end, the Architecture Department has developed a rubric that lists the skills students can be expected to develop in upper-division design courses and describes these skills in terms of specific forms of evidence and levels of performance – weak, competent, and strong.  You will receive a copy of this before beginning of your fourth year studies.  You should refer to this rubric from time to time, especially at the end of each term to assess your own progress in achieving these skills.
