What is the difference between a Co-op and an Internship?
Cooperative education (also called a "co-op") is an internship for academic credit.
A co-op is more than a job; it is a workplace-based experiential learning opportunity supported by observation and reflection on the work environment and tasks performed. Guided by a faculty member, students participate remotely in a common class (via Canvas) with all other Cal Poly Architecture interns enrolled in the same quarter and share their work experiences in real time as well as prepare written assignments.
Co-op's can be completed anytime but most often after the third year of the Bachelor of Architecture program. For more information on our co-op program, including student requirements, please visit the Cooperative Education and Internship page.
We recommend placement in paid internships. This is in alignment with the National Council on Architectural Registration Board AXP Guidelines and Model Rules of Conduct as well as the American Institute of Architect's Code of Ethics.
Posting a Co-op or Internship
If you have a Co-op or Internship opening for architecture students that you would like posted on this board, please fill out and submit the online Co-op/Internship Board Submittal Form. Please review the guidelines on the Cooperative Education and Internship page before submitting your position. The department reserves the right to edit any submittals for length and clarity.
We also recommend that you post your position on the Cal Poly Mustang Jobs site at careerservices.calpoly.edu/recruit-here, which will get your announcement out to a wider audience.
College and University level Career Fairs are organized by the Office of Career Services. For more information on participating in upcoming career fairs visit careerservices.calpoly.edu/recruit-here/connect-cal-poly/career-fairs.
If you have questions, contact the Architecture Department at firstname.lastname@example.org or 805.756.1316. Please notify us if your position is filled so we can remove it from the active Co-op/Internship Board.
Co-op opportunities are available from other CAED departments. Please contact the specific department for a listing of their co-ops.
