Design Village 2015

Design Village 2015

April 17-19, 2015
Cal Poly Canyon

This year’s theme, Clockwork, highlights the dramatic complexity of a complicated but precise system that relies on various integrated components. Beyond the attention to precise mechanical detail implied by the title, Clockwork explores the changing perceptions of time and space and the dialogue between organic systems and the technological ones developed to situate humanity within the environment. Clockwork invites participants to consider these ideas as they design, construct and inhabit temporary structures in Poly Canyon's environment.

paraSite Project 2015paraSITE Project 2015

March 9 - 12
Architecture Building 05

The paraSITE project, now in its 9th year, occurs at the midpoint of the First Year program and offers the students the opportunity to utilize the concepts and skills that they have acquired to that point to engage in an investigation into material, context, and the human scale. Working in groups of four, students are assigned a specific location on the Architecture Building to serve as a site. Each site is carefully drawn and modeled, and the students begin to learn about the influences, both tangible and intangible, that makes their specific site unique. Sketches, watercolors, photographs, rubbings, as well as the creation of temporary instruments are employed to discover ideas about forces at work on their site such as traffic, temperature, materiality, texture, wind, light, and mood. Using this information, each group creates a paraSITE, which is temporarily attached to building while displaying a high quality of craft in joinery and materials, and serves to highlight a site-specific condition through human interactivity.

Projects will be on display throughout the Architecture Building (Building 05). To see photos of past paraSITE projects visit architecture.calpoly.edu/current/exhibitions/paraSITE.

DBIA Opening Fall Meeting

tuesday, oCTOBER 14, 2014
7:00PM, location TBA

Design-Build is both a contractual term and philosophical one, and for the purposes of the student chapter of DBIA, we define design-build as finding the VALUE in everyone's voice.  It is our main goal to simply increase communication (between all students, of all years, and all majors in the CAED and other related departments). We have many goals and can see this club being a part of many exciting things, but before ANY of that can happen we need to go back to the basics and we all know that the most basic, common thing we all share is FOOD.

We will be having two re-occurring meetings every week to simply sit down, eat and discuss our majors, our ideas, our desires for the future and what makes us passionate about designing, engineering and constructing!

Dinner and Discussion - Tuesdays at 7PM
Coffee and Conversation - Sundays at 11AM

For details please contact senmark@calpoly.edu or jacobpruiz@gmail.com.
