FIRST INFORMATIONAL MEETING AND PRESENTATION OF 2011 WORK

Tuesday, January 24, 11-12pm, ROOM 21-120B Urban Design: Between History and Modernity: June 16 to July 15, 2012

Overview

This international summer program is offered by the City and Regional Planning Department with the support of the Universidade Lusofona de Lisboa and its School of Architecture, Urbanism and Geography. The program is open to CRP, Arch, and LA majors, and students can get up to 10 units as follows:

The program will consist of two integrated components dealing with the general theme “Urban Design: Between History and Modernity”: an interdisciplinary urban design studio, and a series of lectures and study trips. In the studio component, the students will develop a mixed-use project for a 4-acre vacant site) next to a multi-modal station in a high-density area of Lisbon. In the other component students will study the qualities of European urban design through lectures by CRP and local instructors as well as study visits in Lisbon and other cities in Portugal, such as Cascais and the medieval towns of Sintra and Obidos. The last week of the program will be dedicated to a study trip to Barcelona, where the class will visit and study the city’s famous public spaces and urban design projects, and attend lectures by local faculty and professionals.

Although we are planning for all classes and lectures to be in English, some may have to be translated since we will depend on the availability of local professionals. We anticipate that undergraduate and graduate students from the Universidade Lusofona in Lisbon will participate in the studio and in most of the study trips.

The class will have a strong studio component plus a seminar component that will include study trips and short urban analyses, concentrating on the relationships between the historic and the contemporary. Students will be able to use the units as needed towards their majors. Architecture and Landscape Architecture students should consult with their academic advisors.
